Overview:
HP MSA2 / MSA2000 Enclosures and Large Format Expansion Enclosures support unique HP SAS Disk Drive Modules with different firmware and trays than other HP storage arrays and Proliant servers. The drives and disks have SAS intermediates attached to the back that convert the native dual-port SAS interface to an SCA-40 connector. Although this SCA-40 connector is the same shape as a Fiber Channel (FC) connector, the units are NOT using the FC protocol. If you look closely at the mediator, the circuit is quite simplistic and no bridge/translator chip is connected. The interposer is, more or less, acting as a signal filter and port relocator to connect to the MSA2's proprietary backplane.
